I spent so much time on Popkins as a kid.....in the 60s I remember sledding, and once my mom (who was steering) lost control of the sled and was screaming at people to get out of the way allllll the way down the hill. We ended up on the (frozen) pond and circled three times before we stopped.

In the summer, we still sledded down Popkins, so to speak. Many times a gang of us (Sharon Stammerjohn, John and Eileen Kelso, Allyson and Scott Furman, Sue Staudaher) would flatten out cardboard boxes and slide down the grassy hill. It was just as fun as sledding but without the freezing cold and wet clothes!

Remember when people actually kept horses on the farm? Now they just keep growing houses, it seems.

:D Man, what memories. I lived on Bertram lane next to the monestery. Remember the night sledding when it turned to ice. The bonfires we would make by tearing wood off of the old barnhouse that was there. Among the other things that happened on the hill. I will always remember those times. Some of the best of my life. What has happened to the hill? Developers?

The hill is now largely covered by Mount Vernon Square Apartments. There are also relatively new houses up at the top, where the actual farm house was. I have some old home movies looking up the hill from Milway Drive -- seeing the hill barren is strange now that I have grown accustomed to the apartments up there!
