I had Mr. Russell for 11th grade English... Very entertaining guy! I had so much fun in his class that I failed and had to take night school to graduate on time. I certainly can't blame him for my transgressions... I simply didn't like English! Robert Braun('81)

I sure did. And I remember a student who didn't agree with him and wrote "Mr. Russell is a hypocrite" on the blackboard before class. Mr. R came in and saw it and read it aloud to the class. Except he pronounced it "hype-o-crite," and seemed very amused by the incident.

Mr Russell- I believe married a girl from my class. I forgot her name, but they both attended our 10 year reunion and looked great and happy together. Yes, he was interesting, he also taught my sister's class of 11 year prior...Kathie Strong

Actually, I just checked the West Potomac web site and Paul Russell is still teaching English there (as of 2/04). I guess retirement is out of the question? He was teaching at GHS in the mid-70s when my sister attended the school on Popkins Lane.

Rumor has it he's going out this year, but I wouldn't bet on it. He's the last of the originals, taught my brothers' in '69, '75, 76, and myself in '77, thought it was a prerequisite for a diploma to have had taken his English class. In '69 he was the Basketball coach also, had his hair to the middle of his back, the last one left from the "old school" on Popkins Lane.

Every Bob Dylan song . . .

Thanks to Mr. Russell, I learned every Bob Dylan song ever recorded (up to 1979). I loved his fringed leather vest and remember a girl in my class named Monica whom he nicknamed "harmonica" which was finally shortened to "hormone."

I had him my junior year for a study hall tried to ask him a question and he was not responding to "Mr. Russell" I tried three or four times no response so I just finally yelled "HEY YOU" that got his attention. But after being rescued by rest of the study hall he was cool about it
